BHP Eyes Investment Opportunities in Indonesia

The Indonesian Nickel Miners Association (APNI) has noted potential interest from Australian mining giant BHP in Indonesia’s nickel sector. Secretary-General Meidy Lengkey mentioned that while discussions have taken place, no official confirmation has been received. BHP’s entry could occur as soon as next year, depending on political conditions and regulations under the new government led by President Prabowo Subianto.

Meidy explained that BHP seeks raw materials for nickel matte production and will need an upstream partner for investment. Indonesia, as the largest global nickel producer, recently imported 380,000 tons of nickel ore from the Philippines due to local supply delays. There are no regulations against nickel imports for processing in Indonesia, a sentiment reflected by PT Kalimantan Ferro Industry, which is also sourcing ore from the Philippines. BHP’s involvement could diversify investment sources in Indonesia’s mining sector beyond Chinese dominance.
