Indonesia Accelerates Aluminium Self-Sufficiency with Integrated Smelter Development

MIND ID is pushing forward with major downstream initiatives to reduce Indonesia’s reliance on aluminium imports by developing an integrated bauxite-to-aluminium supply chain. Government officials highlight that strengthening domestic processing capabilities will generate higher economic value compared to exporting raw materials. A key project underway in Mempawah, West Kalimantan, led by Inalum and Antam, has entered the construction phase, marking a significant step toward building a self-sustaining aluminium industry. With domestic demand continuing to grow, the initiative is seen as essential to support industrial expansion while reducing dependency on imports.

The integrated development includes multiple facilities, from alumina refineries to aluminium smelters and supporting power infrastructure, forming a complete industrial ecosystem. According to leadership at MIND ID, the project represents a long-term strategy to connect raw materials, energy supply, infrastructure, and workforce development into a unified system. With total investment estimated at over IDR 100 trillion, the initiative underscores Indonesia’s commitment to accelerating downstream processing and maximising the value of its natural resources. As global market conditions remain favourable, this move is expected to strengthen national industry competitiveness while supporting broader economic growth.
