Indonesia and Japan Strengthen Partnership in Critical Minerals and Nuclear Energy Cooperation

Indonesia and Japan have reinforced their strategic ties by signing a Memorandum of Cooperation covering critical minerals and nuclear energy during a bilateral meeting alongside the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Ministerial and Business Forum. The agreement reflects both nations’ commitment to building a more resilient and sustainable energy system. Indonesia, home to some of the world’s largest nickel reserves as well as significant deposits of bauxite, tin, copper, and rare earth elements, has expressed strong openness to international collaboration. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia highlighted opportunities for joint development, inviting Japanese government and business partners to participate in managing these resources.

From Japan’s side, Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Ryosei Akazawa underscored the importance of international cooperation in navigating global uncertainty and maintaining stable energy supply chains. The partnership will focus on securing critical mineral supply chains while advancing nuclear energy development with a strong emphasis on safety and low-carbon technology. Both countries also plan to expand collaboration in areas such as LNG and coal supply, alongside accelerating energy transition initiatives under the Asia Zero Emission Community, including projects like the Sarulla geothermal power plant and the Legok Nangka waste-to-energy facility. This growing cooperation is expected to enhance regional energy security while supporting broader decarbonization goals across the Indo-Pacific.
