The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has appointed Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) as a pilot location for the development of a sustainable nickel industrial zone. The designation follows a joint declaration signed between UNIDO and Tsingshan Holding Group in late 2025, marking a commitment to improve governance and sustainability standards across the nickel value chain. Through this initiative, IWIP aims to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into its industrial operations while supporting Indonesia’s priorities on downstream processing, value creation, and workforce development.
As part of the collaboration, UNIDO, Tsingshan, and IWIP have launched a three-year programme focused on strengthening sustainability practices within the industrial park. Key areas include circular economy development, industrial capacity building, community empowerment, and greener supply-chain management. Stakeholder dialogues held at the Weda Bay Industrial Park in early 2026 brought together government representatives, industry players, and trade associations to align objectives and implementation strategies. The initiative is expected to position IWIP as a reference model for sustainable industrial zones in Indonesia, contributing to responsible nickel production and long-term economic resilience.
